About the tomb

Close to the tomb of Clytemnestra, on the south and left part of the path, lies another tomb, which is commonly known as the Tomb of Aegisthus. The name of this tomb is equally conventional.

The tomb of Aegisthus corresponds to the first type of tholos tombs and was probably built around 1500 BC. The height of its dome is estimated at 14.50 m. and small stones were used for its construction. The diameter of the chamber is about 13.50 m. The top of the dome has collapsed at the height of 8 m. Only the remaining part has been studied regarding the building process of the dome. It is built with dry stones, as well as stones of large size.

The tomb was arbitrarily named after Aegisthus, who lived around 1200 BC, although the tomb dates back to 1500 BC.
