About the tomb

Inside the current archeological site of Mycenae, lies the third tholos tomb, the so-called Lion Tomb, in the north of the entrance of the site, on the trail leading to the current museum of Mycenae and in short distance from it. It is named conventionally after the fact that it was located very close to the Gate of the Lions. It dates back to 1350 BC.

These 4 tholos tombs of Mycenae are the most famous. Three of them (Aegisthus, Clytemnestra, Lion) are positioned inside the archeological space. On the eastern part of the hill of Panagitsa, at the left side of the trail leading to the archeological site, lies the fourth and most well-known tomb, the Treasury of Atreus.

The other 5 surviving tholos tombs of Mycenae remain generally unknown to most public, due to their position on the western part of Panagitsa hill, surrounded by olive groves of the area.
